Today, many people using ChatGPT experienced a major outage as the popular AI chatbot service went down multiple times. Users worldwide reported the problem with the service on X and Threads.
OpenAI worked for hours to fix these issues and get the service back online for over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users who rely on the service.
OpenAI’s service status tracker showed that the first problem began at 8:21 AM WAT on June 4. The company reported that it resolved this issue by 12:19 PM WAT — that’s about 5 hrs 29 mins.
However, another outage occurred later at 3:33 PM. OpenAI updated users at 6:17 PM WAT, stating that all systems were back to normal.
We experienced a major outage impacting all users on all plans of ChatGPT. The impact included all ChatGPT-related services but did not include platform.openai.com or the API. This incident started June 4th at 2:15 PM GMT and was resolved June 4th at 5:01 PM GMT.

During the outage, ChatGPT’s website showed a message saying the service was at capacity. Although the site allowed users to sign up and get notified when it’s fully back online, the way it was explained was funny — see for yourself in the screenshot below.
OpenAI did not provide further details about what caused the outage. But in the past 30 days, ChatGPT users have faced a few partial outages. The most significant issue occurred last month when users couldn’t access web results due to a Bing API outage.
