For the first time in history, Apple has failed to release new iPad models which could be attributed to global chip shortage and production delays. According to insights from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant is gearing up to make a strong comeback in 2024, with a comprehensive revamp across its iPad lineup.

Kuo’s predictions paint a picture of an aggressive strategy from Apple, covering updates to various iPad models. Among the anticipated changes are new versions of the iPad Air, including a larger 12.9-inch variant, iPad Pro with cutting-edge OLED displays, enhancements to the iPad mini, and the introduction of a new generation for the most affordable entry-level iPad.

Despite these advancements, Kuo is cautious about the projected unit sales. He anticipates total iPad shipments to reach approximately 52-54 million units, marking a modest increase from the estimated 50 million units shipped in the current year. However, this figure still falls short of the 2022 pandemic peak of 63 million units.

Looking ahead, Kuo outlines a chronological update plan. The first quarter of 2024 is expected to bring updates to the iPad Air lineup, featuring improvements to the existing 10.9-inch model and a new 12.9-inch variant.

The larger screen size aligns with earlier supply chain speculations. Kuo notes that the iPad Air will continue to utilize LCD panels, albeit with an upgrade in the form of a new oxide backplane. Alongside the new screen size, users can anticipate chip upgrades for enhanced performance.

Moving into the second quarter, the iPad Pro is poised for a new generation launch. This iteration promises a redesigned chassis, the latest M3 chip, and a groundbreaking move – integrating OLED displays into the iPad Pro lineup for the first time. The adoption of OLED technology is anticipated to bring significant improvements in display quality and power consumption compared to the previous mini-LED technology.

The latter half of the year, likely in the fall, is earmarked for refreshing the lower end of Apple’s tablet lineup. This phase will witness the introduction of updated versions of the iPad mini and the base model iPad (11th generation). Notably, the existing most affordable iPad, the iPad (9th generation), is set to be discontinued before the close of 2024. This move signifies the completion of the Lighting port transition for the entire iPad lineup.
