The latest information on Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup suggests that the iconic Touch ID fingerprint authentication technology will not be returning to the iPhones. This comes from a reputable source on Weibo known for sharing accurate details about Apple’s plans, especially on integrated circuits.

According to the source, the manufacturing equipment for producing chips required for the iPhone’s version of Touch ID has been permanently shut down. The only remaining units are reportedly allocated for the third-generation iPhone SE. This implies that Apple currently has no intentions of reintroducing Touch ID as a primary authentication method for the iPhone soon. Also, no substantial rumors are circulating about the return of Touch ID for the iPhone 16 lineup, adding credibility to this claim.

Other reports suggest that the upcoming fourth-generation iPhone SE will adopt Face ID, replacing the last iPhone model which had Touch ID. Despite this transition, persistent rumors indicate that Apple is actively developing under-display fingerprint technology, which could potentially make its debut around 2026. This aligns with speculation that Apple might also integrate Face ID under the device’s display during the same timeframe.

The Weibo source, known for accurate predictions, previously reported that the iPhone 14 would retain the A15 Bionic chip, reserving the A16 exclusively for the iPhone 14 Pro models. Also, another update suggests that the chip designed for the upcoming iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will undergo a distinct manufacturing process.

Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup will continue without Touch ID, relying heavily on Face ID as expected. However, the company may eventually, down the line introduce under-display fingerprint technology in the coming years. Right now the company appears committed to innovation in chip design, with a focus on cost-effective manufacturing processes for its future devices.
