Apple recently unveiled its highly anticipated iPhone 15, and as expected, the tech world is buzzing with excitement and opinions. Among the many features and improvements, one aspect that has sparked a lively debate is the choice of a 60Hz display for the non-Pro iPhone 15 models.

While this decision by Apple isn’t entirely surprising, what has been rather unexpected is the response we get from tech influencers and fans regarding Apple’s decision to use a 60Hz display on the non-Pro iPhone 15 models.

For those who have been closely following the smartphone industry, it’s no secret that Apple often reserves certain cutting-edge features for its more expensive Pro models. While this strategy isn’t unique to Apple, it raises questions about whether the average consumer is getting value for their money.

In the aftermath of the iPhone 15 launch, social media feeds have been flooded with a recurring sentiment: “Average consumers don’t care about a 120Hz refresh rate.” This argument seems to suggest that Apple knows what’s best, which means a 60Hz display on a 2023 flagship phone that costs $799 is justifiable. However, if the same thing should happen with any new Andriod flagship device, then it’s an abomination.

In most cases and depending on the hardware, Android version (software), specs, and the brand/manufacturer, we could say that iOS runs smoothly on a 60Hz display and looks better than Android and since Apple has full control of their hardware and software, it makes sense. However, no matter how hard we portray it, 90Hz outsmarts 60Hz and 120Hz even does it way better. You might not know the difference at a glance until you use both 60Hz and 120Hz displays side by side and trust me, you will not want to go back to 60Hz.

While most users would not care, one simply can’t speak for all. Many who have shifted from 60Hz to 120Hz can relate. Therefore anyone regardless of whether an Apple or Andriod fan should understand that dismissing the significance of display refresh rates based on the assumption that people “don’t care” is a misjudgment.

The real reason Apple can comfortably opt for a 60Hz display in 2023 is its well-known ecosystem lock-in. Features like iMessage and FaceTime, along with the vibe of being part of the Apple ecosystem, keep users tidally locked to the brand. While this is good, it often discourages users from leaving their comfort zone to explore what other competitors have to offer. If we truly want innovation, then we must open our hearts to new ideas, and tech and embrace them if they work better.
