In a publication on Thursday, TikTok announced that its platform would now automatically label AI-generated videos and images.
According to the platform, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity will now tag Ai-generated content with “Content Credentials,” a digital watermark technology.
These results from the officials and experts caution against the growing threat of Deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation ahead of the 2024 election.
Content Credentials will assign metadata to contents, which TikTok will use to recognize and label (AI-generated content). This new feature is currently capable of only image and video detection. Soon, there will be audio detection.
Currently, TikTok automatically labels content made with its in-app AI effects but requires creators to label content containing realistic AI.
“We will join the Content Authenticity Initiative, an Adobe-owned group. This initiative aims to set industry standards for ensuring transparency and traceability in the digital production of images, videos, and audio clips. This demonstrates our commitment to combating digital misinformation and enhancing the authenticity of content shared on its platform,” said TikTok.
In February, TikTok with 19 other prominent tech companies, pledged to combat AI-driven misinformation during the 2024 United States election cycle. Among the signatories were industry giants like Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, and OpenAI, collectively committing to take proactive measures against the spread of false information facilitated by artificial intelligence.
However, the future of TikTok is uncertain after United States President Joe Biden signed legislation in April, giving the platform’s parent company ByteDance, nine months to sell the app or face a ban in the U.S.
In conclusion, the social media platform sued the United States Government for violating the First Amendment.
