The reign of Google as the leading search engine is being threatened with SearchGPT by OpenAI.

OpenAI on Thursday debuted a prototype of SearchGPT, its search engine that offers users timely answers with clear and relevant sources.

The AI giant highlighted that it intends to integrate the tool into its chatbot “ChatGPT,” meanwhile SearchGPT is currently being tested by a group of users.

Investors and analysts predict that this rollout would have market share implications for Google and its position as the world’s number one search engine. The concerns began in November 2022, when OpenAI launched ChatGPT, bringing new ways of searching for information online.

OpenAI is exploring the possibility of allowing users to search more naturally and intuitively, enabling them to ask follow-up questions as they would in a conversation. “Its visual results will lead to richer understanding for users,” says OpenAI in its blog post.

We think there is room to search much better than it is today.

The SearchGPT announcement follows the launch of OpenAI’s “GPT-4o mini” last Thursday. This new model is a variant of GPT-4o, their fastest and most powerful model, unveiled in May during a live-streamed event.
