If your visa application to the United States was denied under Presidential Proclamation 9645 (issued in 2017 and often referred to as the “travel ban”) between December 8, 2017, and January 20, 2021, you may now have a new opportunity to reapply.

P.P. 9645 restricted travel to the U.S. from several countries (Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen) due to some security concerns. However, legal challenges argued that the proclamation unfairly targeted specific nationalities and was discriminatory.

A court ruling has now opened the door for those denied visas under this proclamation to seek relief. This relief is available even if you did not receive a waiver under the original proclamation.

Important Dates:

  • Class-wide relief will be available starting on August 12, 2024.
  • Your visa denial must have occurred between December 8, 2017, and January 20, 2021.

If you believe you are eligible for relief, consult with an immigration attorney or legal aid organization as soon as possible. They can help you understand your options and navigate the process of seeking relief.

Presidential Proclamation 9645 was a controversial executive order that restricted travel to the United States for citizens of the above-mentioned countries. This is a welcoming development and a chance for those affected by this proclamation to have their cases once again reviewed.
