It’s less than a month since Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max series which introduced us to a grade 5 titanium iPhone. However, things are not looking so well for Apple, especially with the iPhone 15 Pro Max series.
This material is known for its robustness and durability, with Apple claiming it will make the new iPhones even sturdier than their predecessors. To put this to the test, JerryRigEverything, a well-known tech reviewer, subjected these new iPhones to a series of tests.
Upon applying pressure to the phone’s back, a sudden and audible snap occurred, resulting in complete shattering of the rear glass within seconds – this was his least expectation. Jerry, who has been conducting such durability tests for over a decade, suddenly encounters a phone breaking with such minimal force. Not just from any other brands, but Apple, which is always known for its built quality and durability.
This marks the first instance of an iPhone failing Jerry’s durability assessment for years, except for the iPhone 6 series and Apple iPads. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro, although bent, didn’t succumb to the same fate as the Pro Max which was a sign of relief for many.
An objective observer would likely conclude that Apple has faltered in terms of the new 15 Pros’ durability. Those who own one might start exercising extra caution and consider employing a protective case for added security.
While it is true that the average person wouldn’t deliberately try to bend their phone in this manner, the concern arises from how effortlessly Jerry was able to break the glass. Unlike other phones, even foldable ones, typically withstand his bend tests, this particular iPhone stands as an exception.
Phones, particularly those priced at over $1000, shouldn’t break easily. Not to mention when the material is made of titanium. Apple claimed that the inclusion of titanium would make the iPhone stronger than ever. However, it appears that the design approach is at fault, as it lacks the same structural integrity as earlier iPhone models.
Scratches
Another issue with the Pro models is the susceptibility of the titanium which is prone to scratches, particularly with the blue and black variants. This problem is not from the titanium itself, but rather the PVD coating applied to achieve these colors – that is what is prone to scratches. So, if the blue or black colors are your favorites, then you might want to invest in a protective case.
Overheating
Many iPhone 15 users are reporting that their phones are overheating, with some users reporting phones becoming too hot to handle without a case. Infrared camera readings have recorded temperatures soaring up to 116 degrees Fahrenheit. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo posits that this issue likely stems from compromises made in the thermal system design to achieve a lighter weight, including a reduction in heat dissipation area and the use of a titanium frame. However, Kuo anticipates that Apple may partially rectify the problem through software updates.
