We’ve all been there, facing the dreaded questions like “Tell me about yourself“, “What’s your greatest weakness?” or “Tell me about a time you messed up” The truth is, most interview candidates are always anxious about these questions even before the interview process.

I get it, once upon a time, I was just like you. But just like any other human being, I put myself in check and that was, to get a skill, know what am doing, build confidence, and then, fight my fears.

Trust me, most people who are afraid of interview questions are mostly introverts or they don’t know what they are doing and of course, can’t trust their skills—so why would someone else trust you, if you don’t even trust your abilities? Sometimes they are simply afraid for no reason to express themselves even when they are good at what they do.

Most people like this usually get job offers by recommendations and connections, which sometimes means, no interview is needed to get the job. But what if you are not just as lucky as most of them, what then?

Well, based on my experiences and how I was able to ace through my deepest fear before during, and after interviews, here are tips you can implement to tackle these common interview questions while at the same time leaving a lasting impression.

First Impressions Matter: Dress to Impress (and De-Stress!)

Before we dive into interview questions, let’s talk about that first impression. You want to feel confident and professional walking into the interview room, and your outfit plays a big role in that.

Research the company culture to get a sense of their dress code. Opt for professional attire that’s clean, ironed, and fits you well. When in doubt, go on the side of formality.

Neatly styled hair, polished shoes, and minimal jewelry all contribute to a polished look. Make sure your nails are clean and trimmed. And don’t forget the power of scent! A light spritz of a professional fragrance can boost your confidence. Just don’t overuse it and avoid anything overpowering at all costs.

Classic Questions

  • What’s your greatest weakness? We get it, nobody is perfect. Just don’t try, turn this into a strength! Highlight a past weakness relevant to the job, but focus on the hustle you put in to overcome it. This shows growth and self-awareness. For example, maybe you once struggled with public speaking but joined a public speaking club to become a confident presenter or you found ways to turn your introverted lifestyle into extrovert. Forget imposter syndrome! You’ve come a long way, and you deserve to acknowledge it. Think about it: you’re not the same person you were yesterday, and you’re constantly evolving. You do have incredible accomplishments, and the key to interview success is telling your story with confidence. This is not bragging. It’s about showcasing your growth mindset and ability to deliver results.
  • Tell me about a time you missed a deadline: This isn’t about dwelling on past problems or issues you had. It’s about showcasing your problem-solving skills. Be honest and briefly explain the situation, but quickly shift the focus to your proactive approach. Did you keep your team leader in the loop? Did you find a creative solution to get back on track? Highlight your sharpness and ability to adapt under pressure. Just remember, lessons learned are key. So, share what you took away from the experience and how you’ve improved to avoid similar situations.
  • What’s your biggest strength? Don’t just say “I’m a hard worker” (we know that already!). Instead, tailor your answer to the job description. Look at the listed skills and choose 2-3 that directly match your strengths. Use the STAR method to craft your response: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Briefly describe a relevant scenario where you utilized this strength, the specific task you faced, the actions you took, and the positive outcome you achieved. This provides concrete evidence of your abilities.
  • What sets you apart from other candidates? This is your chance to shine! Do your research. Learn about the company culture, mission, and recent projects. Highlight your unique skills and experiences that demonstrate your passion for the industry and how you can contribute to the company’s success. Mention specific things that resonate with you about the company and why this role is a perfect fit.

Resumes are great, but they only tell part of the story. When it comes to landing your dream job, interviews are your chance to shine beyond the bullet points. Sure, you can list your skills and experience, but what truly sets you apart?

The Secret Weapon: Your Greatest Achievement

This isn’t just about bragging (although a little healthy self-confidence never hurts!). It’s about identifying a personal win that showcases your strengths, values, and ability to achieve big things.

Here’s the twist: This achievement doesn’t have to be work-related. Did you volunteer your time to a cause you care about and make a real impact? Maybe you finally conquered that fear of public speaking and aced that presentation. Unleashing the power of personal growth can be just as impressive as listing past job titles.

So, how do you find your “greatest achievement?” Look inward. Reflect on your journey:

  • Challenges overcome: Did you overcome a personal obstacle that required courage and determination? Sharing this story demonstrates your resilience and ability to bounce back.
  • Skills mastered: Did you learn a new skill or improve an existing one through hard work and dedication? Talk about the process and the positive outcome – it highlights your commitment to self-improvement.
  • Goals achieved: Did you set a seemingly impossible goal and smash it? Whether it was waking up on time or as simple as drinking a certain amount of water every day. Showcasing your goal-setting and achievements can be hugely impressive to potential employers.

Frame Your Achievement for the Interview

Once you’ve identified your greatest achievement, connect it to the job you’re applying for. Explain how the skills, values, and experiences you gained during your achievement translate directly to the role. This bridges the gap between your personal life and professional capabilities.

Always remember that authenticity is key. Don’t fabricate a story! Choose an achievement you’re genuinely proud of and use it to tell your unique story. This way, you’ll leave a lasting impression and show employers why you’re the perfect fit for the job.

Bonus Tips

  • Practice makes perfect: Rehearse your answers to common questions out loud in front of a mirror or with a friend. This helps you refine your delivery and build confidence.
  • Body language matters: Maintain good posture, make eye contact, and use positive facial expressions. Project confidence and positive vibes.
  • Ask insightful questions: Prepare thoughtful questions about the role, the team, and the company culture. This shows your genuine interest and initiative. By doing so, you’ll be well on your way to landing your dream job!
  • Follow up with a thank-you note: Express your appreciation for the interviewer’s time and reiterate your interest in the position. Though optional, a handwritten note is a classy touch!

Wait! – Something is missing

You might be thinking, “What about the classic ‘Tell me about yourself’ question?” Don’t worry, that one is a breeze once you’ve mastered these other interview powerhouses! Why? Because answering “Tell me about yourself” boils down to showcasing your unique value proposition. It’s all about who you are, what sets you apart, and how you’re the perfect fit for the job.

Just anticipate some curveball questions. Interviewers might ask something unexpected to assess your critical thinking and adaptability. Take a deep breath, analyze the question, and provide a thoughtful response that shows you can handle anything. Trust in yourself, hold on to that which matters most to you, and watch the fear of the unknown leave your thoughts.
