Google Drive users are expressing frustration over a glitch that has rendered some unable to access files from the past six months. Google posted on its support forum acknowledging the issue and is currently investigating the problem impacting users of its widely used cloud storage service.

Google Drive is an integral part of Google Workspace, a suite of applications with a user base exceeding three billion worldwide. On Google’s support site, users have voiced their displeasure, with one describing the situation as “very devastating”, emphasizing the importance of the affected files.

The glitch was initially reported on November 22 by a user who said “Google Drive files suddenly disappeared and literally went back to condition in May 2023.” The user also reported that none of the suggested fixes from Google worked. Although the extent of the impact remains unknown, many from different countries have also reported experiencing similar things.

Some have shared their distress at losing recent files, questioning the credibility of Google’s cloud service. Others have threatened to take legal action, declaring the situation unacceptable and highly aggravating, considering they pay monthly subscriptions for the service.

Users are advised by Google not to disconnect their account in the Drive for Desktop app and refrain from deleting or moving the app data folder. However, users are encouraged to create a copy of the folder, if possible, as the company continues to address the issue.
