Apple has recently announced a workforce reduction of 614 employees in California. This comes after the tech giant made internal decisions to shift focus on a couple of long-term projects.

The affected employees, who were notified in late March will officially depart by the end of May. Their roles spanned eight locations in Santa Clara County. While official details remain undisclosed, reports suggest most were involved in Apple’s EV project.

The Project Titan, launched in 2014, faced multiple challenges at different levels throughout its development. Finally, in February 2024, Apple made the difficult decision to wind down the project. Some impacted employees are expected to transition to Apple’s growing generative AI project.

The layoffs also affected a separate team working on next-generation display technology for the Apple Watch and potentially other devices. Details on this project remain limited, but its cancellation suggests Apple may be exploring alternative display solutions for future products.
