In a bid to enhance the user experience on iPhones, Apple is reportedly in talks with Google for a substantial collaboration centered around the integration of advanced AI technology.

According to a report on Bloomberg by Mark Gurman, a tech reporter with a long history of accurate reporting on Apple’s products, Apple seeks to harness Google’s Gemini AI model to introduce innovative features within its iOS ecosystem.

This potential partnership could significantly bolster Google’s foothold in the smartphone market, given its existing agreement with Apple as the preferred search engine provider for Safari, the default browser on iPhones.

Apple could be exploring the licensing of Google’s AI capabilities to incorporate AI-driven functionalities into future iOS updates, to be integrated into Apple products later this year.

Apple has also engaged in dialogue with OpenAI, indicating its keen interest in leveraging cutting-edge AI models, such as GPT, to enhance its product offerings.

Apple is currently facing mounting pressures to compete in the AI race, with rivals like OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic, and Google making big leaps. However, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook has emphasized Apple’s commitment to introducing next-generation AI, dubbed “Gen-AI,” expected to roll out later this year.

While Apple has demonstrated internal efforts towards AI development, evident from job listings and ongoing projects, the exploration of external partnerships suggests a strategic move to expedite innovation in the AI industry.

It’s anticipated that Apple may integrate its proprietary AI models for on-device functionalities, such as image generation and language processing, particularly with the upcoming iOS 18 software update which is usually unveiled at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June.

On the other hand, Google’s Gemini AI model has faced its share of challenges, especially issues with historical inaccuracies in image generation. Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, publicly addressed these concerns, emphasizing the need for improved responses from Gemini.

Despite setbacks, Google remains at the forefront of AI innovation, as evidenced by its recent partnership with Samsung to integrate Gemini-powered features into the Galaxy S24 series and its Pixel devices.
