On Wednesday, Instagram released its latest feature, a generative AI-powered background editing tool, for users in the United States. Meta’s generative AI lead, Ahmad Al-Dahle, shared the news on Threads, detailing how the tool enables users to effortlessly modify the backgrounds of their images within Stories.
Upon selecting the background editor icon on an image, users are presented with engaging prompts such as “On a red carpet,” “Being chased by dinosaurs,” or “Surrounded by puppies.” Users also have the flexibility to craft their prompts, providing a personalized touch to the background modification process.
Once a user shares a Story featuring the newly generated background, viewers encounter a “Try it” sticker accompanied by the prompt. This sticker invites others to explore and engage with the innovative image-generation tool.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, took a broader stride in AI integration earlier this month. The company made its 28 AI-powered characters accessible across all its major apps, including WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, catering to U.S.-based users.
This update brought enhanced functionality, integrating Bing search and refining the context window. Simultaneously, Meta launched “Imagine with Meta,” a standalone AI-image generator powered by its model.
Similar to what Instagram has to offer, Snapchat recently introduced a tool for its premium users earlier this week that allows users to create and send AI-generated images. Earlier this year, Snapchat introduced “Dreams,” a feature enabling users to craft imaginative self-portraits with diverse themes. The platform also expanded its capabilities for Snapchat+ users, offering prompt-based backgrounds.
