Google announced on Wednesday that generative AI will power several of its photo editing tools, and will be free to all Google Photos users soon.

The Magic Editor tool was first seen in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro released last year. The photo editor uses generative AI to produce edits such as object removal while creating new imagery to cover the area, reposition subjects, or even change the color of the sky.

Starting May 15th, 2024, Google One subscribers can leverage the power of AI editing features directly within their Google One Cloud storage.

This exciting development expands the reach of these previously Pixel-exclusive tools, making them accessible to a wider range of Android and iOS users.

With Google One, AI-powered editing becomes more than just a perk for a specific phone; it becomes a valuable asset for anyone seeking a smarter storage solution.

The AI features include Magic Eraser, to remove objects from photos; Portrait Light, to rebalance the picture’s lighting; and Photo Unblur, to sharpen out-of-focus images.

Devices like the Pixel Tablets will also have these features as Google plans to expand them across its ecosystem.

For desktop users, you must use a ChromeBook Plus, with ChromeOS version 118+ or at least 3GB RAM. On the other hand, mobile devices require at least iOS 15 for iPhones or Android 8.0.

As part of the roll-out strategy, Google will expand access to the Magic editor feature for all Pixel devices. All Google Photos users on mobile only have 10 Magic Editor Picture saves per month. Pixel device users and premium Google One subscribers who pay for 2TB of storage will have unlimited saves.
