In a move reflecting the recent regulatory adjustments, Airtel Nigeria, the nation’s second-largest telecommunications operator, has announced a substantial 50% increase in internet and voice services prices. This follows a similar price revision by MTN Nigeria, setting a new precedent in the telecom sector.

Data Plan Revisions:

  • 2GB Monthly Plan: Now priced at ₦1,500, up from 1.2GB for ₦1,000.
  • 3GB Monthly Plan: Increased to ₦2,000 from the previous 1.5GB at ₦1,200.
  • 4GB Monthly Plan: Adjusted to ₦2,500, from 3GB at ₦1,500.
  • 8GB Monthly Plan: Now costs ₦3,000, previously offering 4.5GB for ₦2,000.

For customers requiring larger data allocations:

  • 10GB Monthly Plan: Now available for ₦4,000, up from 6GB at ₦2,500.
  • 13GB Monthly Plan: Priced at ₦5,000, previously 10GB for ₦3,000.
  • 18GB Monthly Plan: Adjusted to ₦6,000, from 15GB at ₦4,000.
  • 25GB Monthly Plan: Now at ₦8,000, from the former 18GB plan at ₦5,000.

Voice Tariff Adjustments:

Airtel Nigeria has also recalibrated its voice call rates, establishing a new flat rate of 25 kobo per second, as confirmed by a company representative to TechCabal. This adjustment has led to a one-minute call now costing approximately ₦15, up from ₦11.

Market Context:

This pricing strategy aligns with the broader industry response to the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval for a 50% tariff increase on January 20, 2025. MTN Nigeria’s initial implementation of the hike stirred considerable public reaction, especially given that their adjustments on some plans exceeded the NCC’s approved margin, leading to an apology from the company.

Plan Availability:

Despite the widespread adjustments, some plans remain unchanged. For instance, the weekly 5GB plan continues to be offered at ₦1,500. Airtel’s Unlimited plans, such as ₦20,000 for 200GB over 30 days with an additional 10GB daily bonus, and ₦30,000 for 300GB over 30 days, still stand as options for consumers needing extensive data packages.

Conclusion:

As telecom operators in Nigeria navigate through these pricing changes, subscribers are encouraged to reassess their usage and budget accordingly. The industry’s response to regulatory mandates underscores a pivotal shift in the telecommunications landscape, with implications for consumer choices and market competition.
