Is Apple planning its own ChatGPT?

Apple is currently hitting the gas for its very own Generative AI tool just like Google Bard and OpenAI ChatGPT. The tech company has been lagging on that front although they’ve already started the AI integration with SIRI.

Rumors suggest that Apple is in the process of developing a ChatGPT-type AI, and I think we’ve got an idea of how it is going to happen.

First of all, the AI would require a huge archive of up-to-date content from different niches to begin with and Apple wants to do it the right way.

The tech giant is currently in talks with news publishers for access to their content archives. A vast amount of materials which the Apple AI Models can learn and source its response.

This deal is projected to worth $50 million, although none of the publishers have concluded a deal yet. The publishers involved include NBC News, IAC (runs People, The Daily Beast & Better Homes, and Garden), and Condé Nast (runs Vogue and The New Yorkers).

You might be wondering, how do AI models get a near 100% constant correct response to the queries/questions you throw at it?

The short answer would be widespread internet scraping. This means that if you have written something online before, your work is probably being used to train the model.

Recently, companies like OpenAI have promised to defend businesses that use their AI against copyright claims. Which is to say that the developers know that they are shaky in terms of intellectual property issues.

This won’t be a problem for Apple as they are going to request for the resources from writers and publishers. A much preferable approach compared to other AI companies who take and ask for permission later.

Although Apple has remained silent about this, we expect to see Apple talk more about AI and other advanced technologies surrounding it in 2024.
